Diabetes Mellitus and Homeopathic Approach



Diabetes Mellitus is a condition associated with disturbance in the metabolism of carbohydrate, fat and protein, coupled with relative or absolute insulin deficiency. Those who are Diabetic have an increased blood sugar. It was considered to be a rich man’s disease till few years back; however, the recent surveys shows alarmingly increase in the incidence of Diabetes even in less affluent group of people. The latest estimates indicate that there are 382 million people living with diabetes worldwide. By 2035, 592 million people or one person in ten will have the disease. A further 316 million people are currently at high risk of developing type 2 Diabetes, with the number expected to increase to almost 500 million within a generation. What makes the pandemic particularly threatening is that in many of the countries, it remains undetected. Up to half of all people with diabetes globally remain undiagnosed. Diabetes is not restricted only to developed nations and is increasingly affecting the developing nations as well. It does not discriminate on the basis of nationality, gender or economic status. According to WHO, about 80 percent of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle income countries. The most intersecting aspect is that diabetes is preventable to a great extend. Another fact is that once affected, it needs long treatment, at time even throughout life with possibility of several complications.

India is the diabetes capital of the world. About 40 million people are suffering from diabetes in India and the number is estimated to increase to 70 million by 2025. This suggests that every fifth diabetic in the world would be an Indian.

Keeping view of the alarming rise of this disease the World Health Organization has called for 14th November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who co-discovered insulin and used it on humans for the first time as World Diabetes Day. This day is dedicated every year to spread the awareness about increasing number of people being affected by diabetes across the world. This day creates awareness regarding the risk factors and emphasizes upon the importance of prevention and treatment of diabetes.

Diabetes an overview

Never before have we consumed as much sugar as we do now. This is part of the reason why diabetes mellitus is becoming more and more of a serious concern. Even children are suffering from an acquired insulin deficiency, type 2 diabetes – often as a result of dietary errors.  The other contributing factor is the change in life style.  Most of developed and developing countries have controlled the communicable diseases which was the major cause of high mortality till recently. In 1990, 56 % of disease burden in the world was on communicable diseases and 29 % was on Non Communicable diseases, while in 2020 it is projected to be 24% of communicable diseases and 57 % to be Non Communicable diseases. Diabetes is one of the major Non Communicable diseases.

There are two types of Diabetes.

Type 1 is sometimes called juvenile diabetes, or insulin-dependent diabetes, where in the body can’t make sufficient insulin. Insulin helps your body turn the sugar from the food you eat into a source of energy. Type 1 occurs more frequently in children and young adults, but accounts for only 5-10% of the total diabetes cases nationwide.

Type- 2 diabetes results when insulin production is defective and tissue resistance to insulin develops. For many persons with Type-2 diabetes, daily insulin supplementation is not required. Diabetes is managed by making moderate changes in diet and exercise. Of the nearly 16 million Americans with diabetes, 90-95% (14.9 million) has Type-2 diabetes. Of these, roughly a third is unaware that they have the disease.

Homeopathic approach on Diabetes

Diabetes is a long term disease and can be treated through various systems of medicines.  Homeopathy has a positive role in early diagnosed cases through constitutional corrections. Many Homeopaths also uses Yoga and Naturopathy along with homeopathic remedies. If the blood sugar is very high the priority is to control the elevated blood sugar to save him from life threatening complications.  There are homeopathic remedies, called organopathic remedies that could reduce the sugar. The commonly used one are Uranium  Nitricum, Phosphoric Acid,  Syzygium Jambolanum,  Gymnema sylvestre and Cephalandra Indica. These are used in physiologically active doses such as Mother tincture or  3x, depending up on the level of the blood sugar and the requirement of the patient.

Another approach is to understand the profile of the patient through a patho- physiological profiling through a detailed case taking and then select a constitutional remedy. This is a unique concept in homeopathy. For this one has to take a detailed history of the patient, his personal, family history, past history, emotions, individual preference, likings, dislikes, sleep, reactions at physical and mental levels and so  are taken and arrive at the individualizing features of the patient.  The process is called Individualization and a remedy is selected  that suits  more close to this  diseases picture (Similia principle). This differentiates Homeopathy from other medical systems. The modern scientists are gradually accepting this concept and they call it personalized medicine or Theranostics.

Some pharmaceutical companies have introduced their propriety preparations  to control the elevated sugar.  A bio chemic medicine which is a part of homeopathy is also widely used by few in the management of elevated blood sugar.  Natrum Phos 3x is one such remedy  used by Homeopaths in improving the digestive disorders and thereby trying to reduce blood sugar.  Many Homeopaths uses Bio combination No 7 along with other medicines..

Fenugreek or Methi seeds,Bitter Gourd (Karela), Pterocarpus (Vijaysar), Gymnema (Gurmar), Guduchi (Amrit) are some of the herbal products  used in controlling blood sugar  with some  success.

Each approach has its own scope and limitations. The physician has to take a decision as to which approach to take on a particular patient. This depend on his general health,  progress of disease, complications, the organs affected, age, duration of illness, other systemic involvement and so on.

Preventive and Promotive approach to Diabetes.

The goals of diabetes treatment are to eliminate symptoms and to prevent, or at least slow, the development of complications. Microvascular (ie, eye and kidney disease) risk reduction is accomplished through control of glycemia and blood pressure; macrovascular (ie, coronary, cerebrovascular, peripheral vascular) risk reduction, through control of lipids and hypertension, smoking cessation; and metabolic and neurologic risk reduction, through control of glycemia.

In preventive and promotive care, every patient have to take both personal, dietetic and homeopathic care to reduce the complications and to maintain quality of life. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented by lifestyle modifications. Some of the easy tips are:                                    

Eat small meals every 2-3 hours regularly instead of consuming large meals. Prefer to steam your vegetables rather than fry them. Reduce the consumption of sugar, alcohol and fatty foods in your diet. Eat fiber rich foods like whole grains, pulses and reduce your intake of oil.  Avoid fried foods.

The Lifestyle modifications that can be followed by everyone are regular exercise for at least half an hour. Prefer to climb stairs rather than using elevators or escalators unless there is any heart ailment. Avoid sitting in same position for longer duration at your workplaces. Take short breaks.  Practice yoga at home in case it is not possible to go outdoors and indulge in household chores in order to keep yourself active and fit.

Even the Type 2 diabetic patients, if they follow the life style modifications and take regular medication under strict super vision of a qualified homeopath, serious complications can be prevented and keep the disease under control. Therefore, the message to those suffering from Diabetes or otherwise is “Wake up before it is too late. Drag yourself away from your sedentary habits and lifestyles. Go outdoors, and indulge in exercises like walking, swimming, jogging, gym, sports. Adequate exercise and dietary control is the secret for a healthy future”.
