Kuṣṭha (leprosy) is a chronic infectious disease which produces various granulomatous lesions in the skin, the mucous membrane, and the peripheral nervous system.

Signs and Symptoms
Excessive smoothness or roughness and discolouration of skin, excessive or absence of sweat, pain like needling, burning sensation, itching, numbness, patches with loss of sensation, increase in the size of wound in spite of treatment, fatigue and exhaustion are the prodormal symptoms of Kuṣṭha.
Svarasa (juice) of fresh stem of Guḍūcī- 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken twice a day. This is helpful in developing immune system of the body.
Powdered fruit of Pippalī (long pepper)- 1 to 3 g. is to be taken with Gomūtra (cow's urine) twice a day. This will help in purifying the blood through the liver correction.
Powdered root of Citraka (Plumbago zeylenica) – 1 to 3 g. is to be taken with Gomūtra (cow's urine) twice a day. This will help in improving liver function.
Powdered seed of Bākucī (Psoralea seeds)- 1 to 3 g. is to be taken with 7-14 ml. juice of Ārdraka (ginger) twice a day.
Kalka (paste) prepared from the rhizome of Haridrā (turmeric) – 12 to 24 g. is to be taken with 50 to 100 ml. Of Gomūtra (cow's urine) twice a day.
Decoction of bark of Khadira (khair) is to be taken in 14 to 28 ml. dose twice a day.
Use of Khadira (khair) for preparing food, drinks, and water for bath.
Pañca-Nimba-TvakCūrṇa – 1 to 3 g. is to be taken with water twice a day.
Fruit rind of Harītakī (Chebulic myrobalan) soaked in Gomūtra (cow urine) for a week, should be powdered and taken in the dose of 3 to 6 g., twice a day with boiled, warm water.
KhadiraSāra (Catechu) – 1 to 3 g. is to be taken with the Svarasa (juice) of fresh leaf of Nimba – 14 to 28 ml. twice a day.
KhadiraSār (catechu) – 1 g. Mixed with powdered Seed of Bākucī - 1 g. is to be taken with Svarasa (juice) of fresh leaf of Nimba- 14 to 28 ml., twice a day.
TriphalāCūrṇa: 3 to 6 g. is to be taken with juice of fresh leaf of Nimba – 14 to 28 ml. twice a day.
LaghuMañjiṣṭhādiKvātha: 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken with the powdered root-bark of Trivṛt (Indian turpeth)- 1 g., twice a day.
BṛhadMañjiṣṭhādiKvātha: 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken twice a day.
Rasa Māṇikya: 30 to 120 mg., is to be taken with 1 g. powdered seed of Bākucī, thrice a day (This should be taken under the close supervision of a specialist in Rasa-shastra/Ayurvedic Physician).
Ārogyavardhanīvaṭī: 1 g. is to be taken with 50 ml. warm water twice a day. This may be used in consultation with a qualified Ayurveda physician.
PañcatiktaGhṛta: 14 to 28 g. is to be taken twice a day.
PañcatiktaGhṛta Guggulu: 14 to 28 g. is to be taken twice a day.
Khadirāriṣṭha: 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken with equal quantity of water twice a day after meal.
External Applications for local use
Oil obtained from the seeds of Tuvaraka or Karañja is to be used for massage.
The decoction prepared from Kalka (paste) of bark of Karavīra (oleander) and mixed in SarṣapaTaila (mustard oil) is to be used for massage.
Take ŚuddhaGandhaka (sulphur) – 25 g. Yavakṣāra 10 g. and SarṣapaTaila (mustard oil) – 50 to 100 ml. mix together and use for massage locally.
Mix ṢuddhaGandhaka (sulphur) – 25 g. in 50 to 100 ml. of SarṣapaTaila (mustard oil), expose to sun for three days and use for massage.
Prepare paste (Lepa) from the powder of equal part of leaves of Āragvadha (Cassia) and Vāsā (vasaka), seeds of Chakramarda (foetid cassia) and Karañja (Pongamia pinnata).
Prepare a paste (Lepa) in water taking equal part of seed of Chakramarda (foetid cassia), fruit of ŚvetaJīraka (cumin) and root of Sudarśana. This paste is to be applied on the affected part.
Prepare a paste (Lepa) in curd taking equal parts of seeds of Bākucī, Kāsamarda (negro coffee), and Chakramarda (Foetid cassia), rhizome of Haridrā (turmeric) and Saindhava (rock salt).The same should be applied on the affected part.
Prepare a paste (Lepa) in buffalo's butter taking equal parts of Marica (black pepper) and Sindūra. The same is to be applied on the affected part.
Management of leprosy can be done by a special procedure - Blood letting (Rakta mokshana) under the specialized guidance of Ayurveda surgeon.
For better results, a holistic treatment of leprosy may be initiated after performing Vamana (emesis therapy) every fortnight and Virechana (purgation therapy) every month to be done by a specialist in Panchakarma physician.
Beneficial diet in cases of leprosy are as follows:
TiktaDravya, PurāṇaYava (old oat), Godhūma (wheat). Śāli ( a variety of rice), seeds of Mudga (phaseolus bean), Āḍhakī (pegion pea) and Masūra (Lentil); old ghee, SarṣapaTaila (Mustered oil), TilaTaila (sesame oil), NimbaTaila (neem oil), HingotaTaila, AguruTaila; urine of cow, camel, ass and buffalow; Mṛgamada (Kastūri, musk); fruits of Karkaṭa (cucumber), Trapuśa (a variety of cucumber) and Paṭola (fruit of a variety of small cucumber- snake gourd); VetasŚuga (cane shoot), fruit and leaf of Kākamācī, leaf of Karañja (Pongamia pinnata); bulb of Rasona (garlic); Nāgakeśara,(Mesua ferrea), Keśara (saffron), and fruit of Tāla (palmyra) are the useful articles of diet for the patients of Kuṣṭha (Leprosy).
Apathya (Harmful diets and lifestyle)
The harmful diets are Amla and Guru Dravya; Navīna Anna (freshly harvested grains); Māṣa (black phaseolus bean); Mūlaka (radish); Taila (oil), milk, curd; products of sugarcane, Guḍa (jaggery);
The concept and directions for incompatibility of food items mentioned in Ayurveda should be considered. Madya (wine) are harmful for the patient of Kuṣṭha. Salt restricted diet is preferable.

Day sleep and sexual intercourse should be avoided.
Svedana (sudation) is contraindicated for the patient of Kuṣṭha.
